European Funding Roundup: Mistral, TEC, Tavion, Limetax

Four European companies raised €3.5B in September 2026: Mistral's €3B Series D, TEC's €387M space round, Tavion's €45M batteries, Limetax's €36M tax AI.

September 2026 will be remembered as the month European deep tech stepped into the global heavyweight division. Four companies — one in Paris, two in Germany, one in Stockholm — closed funding rounds that collectively moved the needle on Europe’s reputation as a place that builds, not just regulates.

Here is the full breakdown of what happened, why it matters, and what each round signals about where European capital is actually going.

1. Mistral AI — €3B Series D at €21B valuation

Paris, France · Led by Samsung, EQT Scaleup Europe Fund, PSG Equity

The numbers alone make this the headline: €3 billion at a post-money valuation of €21 billion, the largest equity round ever raised by a European tech company. But the strategic bets behind it are even more interesting.

Mistral’s CEO Arthur Mensch was explicit about where the money goes: concrete, not code. The company is already spending €4 billion on data centres across France and Sweden, with a facility outside Paris operational and another under construction in Sweden. Microsoft has committed to funding capacity from its European network of Nvidia-backed infrastructure.

The investor roster reads like a roll call of global tech: Samsung leads, joined by co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and PSG Equity. New investors include Advent, BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Existing backers — a16z, ASML, BNP Paribas CIB, Bpifrance, General Catalyst, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, Salesforce Ventures — all returned.

What this signals: Europe’s open-weight model strategy is now a state-level priority. Samsung’s participation is not just about AI chips (though that is part of it) — it is a supply-chain bet on European compute capacity that Samsung can plug into its own foundry business. The Scaleup Europe Fund’s involvement ties Mistral directly to the €5 billion EU-backed vehicle that exists specifically to prevent the next Mistral from needing to look east or west for its Series D.

Mistral’s differentiation — open weights, European values alignment, and now a data-centre rollout — positions it as the default platform for EU-regulated AI deployments. As I argued in my analysis of open-source AI tool economics, the real moat is not the model, it is the stack around it. Mistral is building that stack from the silicon up.

2. The Exploration Company — €387M Series C

Munich, Germany · Co-led by Bessemer, Atomico, EQT Scaleup Europe Fund

At €387 million, this is the largest Series C ever raised by a European space company — and the largest round ever led by a female founder and CEO in the EU. Hélène Huby’s team is building Europe’s answer to SpaceX: reusable capsules and rocket engines.

The technical plan is concrete: TEC’s Nyx capsule will carry cargo to and from orbit, docking with the International Space Station before returning safely to Earth. Its first full-scale orbital demonstration is slated to begin soon. The Storm engine — a reusable high-thrust engine powered by liquid oxygen and biomethane using a full-flow staged-combustion cycle — is Europe’s first attempt at matching SpaceX’s Raptor architecture.

The round structure is notable: Bessemer and Atomico co-led with the Scaleup Europe Fund, while existing European backers (Balderton, Plural, Cherry, Red River West) all returned. Bessemer partner Alex Ferrara is joining the board. Total funding to date: approximately $680 million.

TEC has already secured $2 billion in contracts and commitments from public and private customers, including a Space Act Agreement with NASA — the first such agreement between NASA and a European space startup. Both French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen publicly endorsed the round, framing it as proof that Europe can build strategic autonomy in critical infrastructure.

3. Tavion — €45M for grid-scale batteries

Stockholm, Sweden · Led by Leitmotif and Oberon Capital

Launched only in April 2026, Tavion is already building its first battery parks in Poland. The €45 million round — split between €25 million in equity and €16 million in debt — funds three battery parks in Poland with a combined capacity of 69 MW, plus acceleration of Tavion’s broader 1.7 GW development pipeline.

The thesis is simple but urgent: Europe’s grid stability increasingly depends on storage, not generation. Poland is in the middle of a rapid energy transition, rebuilding its generation mix while grid-scale renewables come online. Battery parks that can store excess renewable power and discharge during peak demand are the missing piece.

Leitmotif’s Philipp Emig and Oberon Capital’s Daniel Linnergren both emphasized that Tavion’s team brings “the experience, drive and focus” needed to execute in a sector where technical delivery is everything and capital is only table stakes.

4. Limetax — €36M to AI-enable German tax advisory

Berlin, Germany · Led by Motive Partners, with Activant and Heliad

Limetax is tackling one of Europe’s most analog sectors: tax and accounting advisory. Germany alone has nearly 54,000 tax and accounting firms, and the industry faces a structural labour shortage as rules grow more complex.

The approach is a roll-up, but with a twist. Rather than simply acquiring firms and stripping costs, Limetax takes equity stakes in established, well-run practices and rebuilds how they operate from within. Its proprietary AI platform, ATLAS, deploys specialized AI agents across bookkeeping, payroll, and financial statements — running on top of DATEV, the software backbone of the German tax profession.

The €36 million package is structured as €6 million in pre-seed equity plus a €30 million acquisition facility from a consortium of German banks. Angel investors include former German Finance Minister Christian Lindner, 468 Capital co-founder Alexander Kudlich, and the founders of fintech unicorn Moss.

Eight months after launch, Limetax has expanded to four firms across seven locations, employs around 150 people, and reports double-digit millions in annualised revenue. Early deployments have cut monthly bookkeeping time from 20 hours to 6.

The Pattern

These four rounds are not coincidental. They share three characteristics:

  1. Open-weight / open-infrastructure plays. Mistral’s open models, TEC’s open architecture approach, Tavion’s grid-as-platform, Limetax’s ATLAS — all build on open interfaces that can be recombined by partners.

  2. EU-backed capital coordination. The Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) co-led both Mistral and TEC — the first time a single EU vehicle has participated in two of the bloc’s largest-ever rounds in the same month.

  3. From software to steel and silicon. Two of the four companies — TEC (space) and Tavion (grid storage) — are hardware-first businesses that need physical infrastructure, real supply chains, and multi-year development cycles. EU policymakers are finally matching rhetoric with capital behind these timelines.

What Comes Next

Mistral will use its data-centre spend to offer European enterprises a sovereignty-compliant alternative to US cloud providers. TEC will dock Nyx with the ISS and start Storm engine tests. Tavion will deliver its first Polish battery parks. Limetax will keep folding tax firms into its agentic network.

All four are building platforms, not products — the theme I explored in why platform engineering matters for AI infrastructure. September 2026 may be remembered as the month Europe stopped talking about building and started spending like it means it.
